French Onion Pasta for Kreacher

Ah, Kreacher. That most unpleasant of house elves. At least when we first meet him. By the end of the Harry Potter series, we see a kinder, gentler Kreacher. A Kreacher that makes the best french onion soup Harry has ever tasted. For most Potterheads, Dobby is the landslide winner of any elf popularity contests, and I’m no different. Of all the endings in the HP series, Dobby’s is still most painful…I’m sorry if that’s a spoiler, but the final movie came out in 2011. I think that spoilers are allowed once we reach the half-decade mark. But, Kreacher’s redemption is certainly compelling and I can appreciate anyone that makes a great french onion soup.

Now, I love french onion soup. It’s savory and cheesy, with a big toasty piece of good bread on top…but, alas, my children are not as excited about it as I am. So, I’m tasked with making something that gives me the flavor I like, but embodies the qualities that my children enjoy. Bonus for being simple to prepare. My (basically) one dish french onion pasta fits the bill on all counts.

Now, I’m a big proponent of from scratch cooking and real food ingredients. That being said, I used a dry soup mix in this. Partly for ease and partly because I had it on hand and I hate waste more than I hate the occasional shortcut. You could absolutely sub it out for a homemade soup mix with no problem at all. You can also sub out some or all of the Swiss cheese with mozzarella if you like a milder flavor.

French Onion Pasta for Kreacher

Inspired by Kreacher’s French Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • 8 oz penne pasta, cooked and drained
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 cup of beef stock
  • 1 packet dry french onion soup mix
  • 2 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 TBSP flour
  • 1/2 cup shredded swiss cheese

Directions

  1. Saute ground beef, onion, garlic in broiler-safe skillet until meat is browned and veggies are soft. Drain and set aside.
  2. Add beef stock to pan. Scrape all the good bits off the bottom. Add soup mix and Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Stir in flour and allow to thicken slightly.
  4. Add meat mixture and cooked pasta to the pan. Toss to coat with sauce. Simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle with cheese.
  6. Place under broiler until cheese is brown and bubbly.
