Captain Jack’s Hypervodka

What? Another Doctor Who reference? I know. It’s shocking. Oh…wait…it’s really not. I can’t think of anyone more equipped to help us out with a Thirsty Thursday post than Captain Jack Harkness. For those of you non-whovians out there (you mythical creatures, you) Captain Jack is a former Time Agent and head of Torchwood. He’s a partier, a lover of all creatures (literally,) and good friend to the Doctor. At least when his immortality doesn’t grate on the Doctor’s nerves.

The first time we meet Jack is back in WWII with Rose and the ninth Doctor. The episodes “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances” are favorites for many reasons, not least of which is the introduction of Captain Jack played by John Barrowman. At the end of the story, things are looking bleak for our favorite captain and so he does what any of us would do. He gets himself a drink. He also waxes poetic about another time he was facing death, when he downed three hypervodkas and woke up in bed with his executioners. (They stayed in touch.) Clearly, hypervodka must be pretty strong. I’m hoping it also tastes good, although I’m guessing it doesn’t. If it was real that is. But, that’s what I’m here for. Making fake food real. So here goes…

Obviously we had to start with vodka. It’s in the name. It also should go without saying that I could only use ingredients that are found on earth in the current time period. That does go without saying, right? I figured that Captain Jack would appreciate something as spicy as he is, but I also didn’t want it to be hot. I thought about pepper-infused vodka, but that didn’t feel quite right to me. Then, I considered coffee-infused vodka, but I didn’t want to end up with a Kahlua imitation. I finally landed on a lovely fall combination that I think turned out nicely.

You can drink this on the rocks, if you’d like. The molasses cuts the kick a bit and it is reminiscent of gingerbread. It would be divine in some apple cider or even in the pumpkin juice we made a while back. Stay tuned, though, because I plan on using it another fictional drink next week!
