Bantha Milk Cremosa

Is there any beverage (not) on the planet more iconic than the blue milk from Star Wars: A New Hope? Blue milk in plastic cups. Groundbreaking special effects right there folks. I jest, of coBlue milkurse. Star Wars was historic in its production and scope. Decades on, it is as popular as it ever was. With the last episodes of the original series in the pipeline, along with the planned standalone movies, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Which is fine with me. Your first fandom always holds a special place in your heart.

Now, let’s get down to business. “Blue milk” is Bantha milk. Banthas are large mammals that live on Luke Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine. I can’t imagine how you would milk one.  I mean, it’s about the size of an elephant, covered in hair, and just a bit temperamental. I’m not sticking my hand anywhere near any part of it, let alone where I would need to stick it to milk the thing (presumably anyway, I’m no Bantha anatomy expert.) So, unless one of you has access to a Bantha and a willing Bantha milker, we’re going to have to use our imaginations a bit.

The easiest thing would be to throw some blue food coloring into a glass of milk, but where’s the fun in that? I’ve always liked a good cremosa. Also known as a French Soda or Italian Cream Soda, a cremosa is a staple at college coffee houses around this great country. A lovely mix of flavored syrup, soda water, and cream (or half and half) they are delicious and completely customizable. You have a couple of options to achieve blue. There’s non-alcoholic blue curacao syrup (which is really orange flavored syrup dyed blue) or blueberry syrup (watch out or you’ll end up with purple milk!) but I chose blue raspberry. My boys love blue raspberry and, confession time, so do I. It is not natural. It does not taste like raspberries. It is full of strange dyes. What can I say, no one is perfect…Obviously, you can do this with any flavor you like, so if blue is just not your thing, try it with a different flavor syrup, but do try it! They are delicious and refreshing!
