I am Dauntless

Ha, ha. No I’m not. I’m erudite or amity. Or divergent. Probably divergent. Have you read Divergent by Veronica Roth? It’s a great addition to the young adult, dystopian genre. I like the first installment the best, but the whole trilogy is solid. I know not everyone agrees with me, and that’s ok. Also, the books are way better than the movies. The basic premise is that society now lives in factions representing the trait they most embody. The Erudites value learning above all else. Abnegation is all about self-sacrifice. The Dauntless are fearless, physical risk takers. You can see now why I’m not Dauntless, can’t you? It’s ok. I’ve long accepted my non-Dauntlessness… However, there is one thing about being Dauntless that we can all get behind. Their chocolate cake. Apparently, it is chocolate cake beyond imagination. The best chocolate cake around. The stuff of legends. Are people who live in a strange, dystopian society the best judges of what constitutes a phenomenally good cake? I really can’t say, but I’m taking them at their word.

Now, there are literally thousands of recipes for chocolate cake available in this online world. There are some that claim to be “Dauntless Cake” and they’re probably lovely. I mean, they’re chocolate cake. They’re not going to be bad. It would be impossible. But, for my Dauntless cake I went straight to one of the masters and made the sheet cake variation of the one bowl chocolate cupcake recipe from Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook (affiliate link.) You can’t go wrong with any recipe out of this book. Every one I’ve made has been delicious.

I also made some choices based on the dystopian setting. I made this a sheet cake because it appears that our Dauntless friends eat cafeteria style. This cake would be delicious with some berries or whipped cream, but again, that didn’t feel true to the setting. I absolutely did not scrimp on the frosting and my recipe for Dauntless chocolate buttercream is below. I can’t begin to describe how decadent and chocolatey this frosting really is. It is divine. The whole cake is, actually. Between the cake and the frosting almost an entire can of cocoa powder got used. That is serious chocolate, my friends.

So, settle back with your book and enjoy. After all, if the world’s going to end, at least we can have cake.

Dauntless Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • Servings: 12
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

To go with the legendary Dauntless cake


  • 1 cup butter, softened (I used salted)
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 3/4 cup dutch process cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 TBSP half and half


  1. Cream butter.
  2. Stir in cocoa powder.
  3. Slowly sift in confectioner’s sugar 1 cup at a time until all is incorporated.
  4. Stir in vanilla and half and half.
  5. Cover with moist towel until ready to use.
  6. **I did all the mixing by hand, which is a workout. You can do it with an electric mixer, but it feels more Dauntless the other way.**
